This paper describes an introductory undergraduate linguistics course that included a service-learning component on African-American English. During the regular class meetings, the instructor focused on the linguistic and social features of African-American English. Outside class, students were required to give four hours a week to service in the community, which was fulfilled through tutoring and mentoring students in local schools where they worked with speakers of African-American English. Students mentored through The Big Brother in-school mentorship program at an elementary school in Williamsburg, VA, and through a mentorship and tutoring program at a school for middle and high school students who have been suspended or expelled from the general public school population.
